Plan a Trip to Florence

Florence is consistently one of the most popular choices among abroad students, especially female abroad students. More so than any other popular abroad destination, Florence is more like a town than a city. It’s small, with narrow cobble-stone streets that require you to stand up against a wall when a car is passing.  Choosing to study abroad in Florence allows you to spend a semester living in the heart of the Renaissance; Florence was once one of the richest and most powerful cities in the world, and is chock full of history. 500 years ago, Michaelangelo may have lived on a street a few blocks away from your apartment. Soak it up, because you’ll never have this chance again. Because Florence is more of a town than a huge bustling city like some other abroad destinations, the rumors are true: you will be walking everywhere. Florence has no subway system because of its size, so Google Maps will be your best friend.  While this may sound like a pain, it has its upsides. You will truly master the city and be proud that in 30 years you could come back, walk the streets with your eyes practically closed, and still know exactly where to find your favorite gelato. Another advantage to living in a walking city is the lack of a need for taxis, which will save you countless Euros.
So when you decide to go to Florence, know what you are getting yourself into. You are going to a city full of rich history, amazing art, and delicious food. You are not going to a city known for its clubs or nightlife. While Florence definitely has its fair share of fun spots, there are also some aspects of its social scene that may deter some people from going. The clubs in Florence operate on a card system, which is definitely a downside of the city’s nightlife. When you go into the club, you receive a punch card.  This is how you buy your drinks.  No money is exchanged at the bar, nor can you open a tab. IF YOU LOSE YOUR CARD, YOU ARE CHARGED 50 EUROS. There is literally no way possible way around this. And you can imagine how many people this probably happens to every night. They don’t care who you are or who you know, you are charged.  When you want to leave the club, you have to wait on an endlessly long line to get your card processed and pay.  It’s will be a nuicance, but to make it as easy as possible, just don't lose your card.
Despite the annoying card system, Florence still manages to offer a lively nightlife, in addition to its beautiful scenery, delicious food, and rich history. If you really want to get to know your city while studying abroad, this may be the city for you.
